Can I Get a Digital Marketing Job Without a Degree?

While there’s no doubt that some digital marketing businesses are looking for candidates with a relevant marketing degree, it’s not the only criteria they use in selection nowadays. If you can demonstrate that you know what you’re talking about and you’ve built a useful skill base, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get your foot in the door with even some of the most prestigious companies.

Build Your Own Blog

It’s by far the easiest way to cement some form of online reputation and is relatively cheap to do. There are a million and one different marketing blogs out there but that doesn’t mean yours can’t stand out from the crowd. Not only that but it teaches you how to undertake important marketing tasks such as creating engaging content and building a content calendar.

Aim to post regularly and use those articles to not only impress but learn too. Don’t forget to measure your performance and understand how the various metrics work with tools such as Google Analytics.

Build Your Own Website

Slightly more complicated but still achievable is to build your own website. It’s not as difficult as you may think and most of the cms platforms like WordPress are easy to understand and configure. Many marketing businesses will use these to build sites for clients so give yourself the chance to learn a lot more about how HTML and other coding language works.

Get Social

We all know how important social media is for marketing and the importance that many companies put on its management. You should, at the very least, be on Twitter and Facebook and post regularly. Build your following, post the right kind of content and show that you know how to handle these kinds of media. You can also learn a bit about how social media feeds into other marketing tools such as your blog.

Learn Online

There are numerous opportunities to learn about marketing as well as all the latest trends online and most of it is actually free. You don’t always need a certificate or full-blown degree but you certainly will require a deeper level of knowledge than how to do a SMART analysis. Try to learn something new everyday and keep up with the latest developments.

Freelance Online

While there are plenty of options which will deliver the knowledge you are looking for, you also need to demonstrate your expertise and capability. The good news is that there are plenty of freelancing sites out there where you can do this, whether you want to write content, build websites or handle social media accounts. The key here is to build up a reputation which means getting good ratings. If you can do that over a period of time, you greatly improve your employability.

There’s no doubt that digital marketing offers a whole host of opportunities and is a growing sector that is incredibly varied. If you haven’t got a degree but want to work in this arena, the onus is on you to demonstrate your capabilities. Get it right and you should find doors and digital marketing job opportunities opening up for you.
