As is expected with digital and online news for businesses, we talk a lot on this blog about best local SEO techniques. Search Engine Optimisation is, of course, far from a one-trick pony, but getting your business details out there (NAP – name, address, phone), along with information about what you do, is one of the key parts of giving your company a strong online presence. There are a number of ways to do this, but a key one is through Free Business Directories, but there is more to it than just finding two or three and going with them.
There are dozens, and here we’re going to show you the ones you need, and the ones that are worth doing to compound your online presence.
UK Free business directories to get found on Google
Google My Business
You probably know Google My Business, but just as another name. Google My Business effectively rolled their services together, and it doubles as a directory that is perhaps the most important one you can be part of. After all, you’re trying to impress Google, right?
Yelp is pretty famous for its reviews, but behind that functions an important online business directory which can be leveraged as an important SEO platform. It helps to then have positive reviews, though, so keep your customers happy!
Hotfrog has been growing at a steady rate for years, and ranks high on Google as a directory. It’s live in dozens of countries and over 1 million people visit its pages every month.
Yell is just the digital version of those famous Yellow Pages, but with millions of businesses in thousands of categories, you’re missing a trick if you don’t take it seriously as an online directory.
Like Hotfrog, Cylex is active across the world, but their 1 million users come per day rather than Hotfrog’s month! It’s not quite as high here as the latter, though, because Google seems to favour Hotfrog.
With hundreds of thousands of businesses and reviews from customers, FreeIndex is an important part of a directory strategy. An interesting element to this one is their prominent use of videos, more so than other lists. That bodes well for their future considering the research around consumer behaviour and preferences.
One of the few directories in the UK to offer an offline along with online version of their directory, which sets them apart. Online, this list includes around 2 million businesses!
Less global than something like Yelp, but Business Magnet is making some waves in the UK as a dedicated B2B business directory. They help build brand authority and give you a backlink, and it’s all free – which is why hundreds of thousands of businesses are listing on their platform.
After kicking off their platform in London, LaCartes quickly took off, and now have business listings from some 138 countries and counting! They boast an outstanding page ranking on Google too.
Actually sites under the Yalwa network of online businesses. It is a free classifieds website, where businesses can opt to add depth to their listing with videos and images.
So, that seems like a fair chunk to choose from, but you also may be wondering why we’ve missed a few (Bing, anyone?!). Needless to say, there are many more where the above came from, but those we’ve outline briefly are important parts of both a local and broad SEO strategy, and each come with benefits of free accounts, decent Google rankings and large audiences. There are other options though for someone looking for free business directories, and here is a simplified list of others you should keep in mind, followed by those not in the top 100,000 most popular sites in the UK:
